What is a good tip?
A good tip is about 20% from your bill. Usually people will tip 1 through 5 dollars when they buy a couple of drinks. You are welcome to leave more money. Many people will leave bigger tips when they receive a great service. It's a way of saying, “Thank you.”How much do bartenders make?
Bartenders make minimum wage or less. In addition, they get taxed on their tips. Their pay check is very small after all the deductions. Their income comes from the tips received from the customers and not much from the pay check that they get from the place they work at. All bartenders rely on tips for their living.
Do I have to leave a tip when I buy a drink?
It's not that you have to; it's the right thing to do. Remember that you are getting a service and that a tip is the payment for that service. Bartenders work hard for their tips. Please be generous to them.Always leave a tip
Bartenders make minimum wage or less. All the bartenders rely on tips for their living. That's their major income.Bartenders get taxed on their tips
Bartenders get taxed on all credit card or ATM tips. When you pay with your credit card or ATM and you write your tip on the bill, the bartenders are going to get taxed on that tip. If you leave a tip in cash, they don't get taxed on that tip. Unfortunately, bartenders are required to claim all their cash tips. When bartenders have to do their income tax, they have to fill out extra forms because they get tips. If bartenders don't claim their tips or if they claim a low amount, the IRS will do it for them. The IRS will calculate the amount that bartenders should have made according to the hours worked for the whole year.
Never leave a tip designated for a bartender to a manager
If you leave a tip designated for a bartender to a manager, most likely the bartender is not going to get that tip.Complaining about prices to a bartender
Some customers complain about high prices at some bars. Unfortunately, they complain to the bartender instead of the person (the business owner) responsible for the high prices. Bartenders don't make the drink prices. They also don't make a profit from what they sale. They make their money from the tips that they get from the customers.Always know what you are going to order
When you go to a bar to get a drink, it's a good idea to know what you are going to order before approaching to the bar. Many times when bartenders ask the customers, “What can I get for you?” they will answer, “I don't know.” If you need some help on deciding what to drink, let your bartender know. Give him/her some suggestions on what do you feel like drinking (a beer, a shot, a really strong drink, something with vodka, something fruity, etc).Never tell a bartender to give you something good
Bartenders always try to give something good to their customers. Unfortunately, something good for you might not be something good for somebody else. Let your bartender know what do you like (fruity drinks, shots, vodka, sweet drinks, strong drinks, coffee drinks, beer, wine, etc), so he/she can think of a drink that is going to be to your satisfaction. If you are looking for a particular beer, ask if they have it
Many people will go to a bar and ask the bartender, “What beers do you have?” Many places carry a wide variety of beers. Asking that question to the bartender will drive him/her crazy trying to name all the beers.
Suggestion for Bartenders: If the place you work at doesn't have a beer list, make one and show it to the customers. It will save you time trying to name all the beers that your work place carries. You can also ask the customer, “Are you looking for a beer in particular?” That way, they'll tell you can they're looking for.
Suggestion for Customers: Many customers ask the bartenders, “What do you have in tap?” Most of the time, the tap beers are visible to the customers, so look at those first to see if you like something. If the tap beers are visible, there is no need to ask, “What are your tap beers?” Be patient when the bartender is busy
A bar could get crowed really fast. A bartender only has two hands and could only serve some people at a time. If a bartender is busy, please be patient. He will help you as soon as he/she can. It is very stressful working behind the bar when you have a lot of people yelling at you for a drink.
Advice to the Customers: If you go to a bar and the bartender is really busy, please be patient and don't get mad. If you get mad, the bartender might not approach to you because the chances that you are going to leave a good tip are low. Bartenders rather help people that are patient and that are going to leave a good tip. Some times when you are patient, the bartender might be more generous to you. Insuring a Good and Fast Service: Some customers will give a bartender 20 dollars or more before ordering any drinks. This is done to insure a good and fast service. This is a way of saying, “If you take care of me, I'll take care of you.”
